Multiple Teams · Coach Seydel Announces his Retirement from Coaching

Coach John Seydel, head basketball coach for 31 years at Arlington, a four-time League Coach of the Year and three-time Riverside Country Coach of the Year announced his retirement from Coaching. We are lucky to still have him as a valuable member of the Arlington staff where he will continue to teach Physical Education and serve the Arlington community.

Coach Seydel graduated from North Salinas High School in 78’ and played college basketball at Cal Baptist University where he earned his single subject Physical Education credential. He continued his education and earned a MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman in 97’.

His playing days proved impressive as an All-County selection player for High school and a 1st team pick for All-Conference at Harnel Junior College. His leadership skills and take charge personality earned him a starting spot along with the honor of Team Captain.  After college he had the opportunity to play and coach overseas in New Zealand, Figi, Hong Kong, China & Macau.

He spent the last 37 years coaching, 5 as an assistant at CBU under Head Coach Jerry King and 31 years here at Arlington as the Boys Head Basketball coach. He has earned a spot as a member of the Riverside Hall of Fame “Wall of Distinction” and can soon be a nominee for the Riverside Hall of Fame.  December 27th 2020 Coach Seydel earned his 500th with a 48-38 win over Mt. View, a true milestone in his already noteworthy coaching career.

All the accolades for coaching or playing could not account for what he is most proud of, his three children, Tabitha (31) Jacob (26) and Joshua (23).  He will continue to teach at Arlington and take advantage of his extra time off the court to enjoy golf, biking, gaming, cooking and traveling.

We wish Coach Seydel the best of luck in his retirement and future endeavors.  He leaves the program in good hands. James (Donald) French will take over as the interim head coach for this season. Coach French has coached with Seydel for the past 6 years and will make it a smooth transition for the team.  Congratulations Coach Seydel!! LION PRIDE
